There is nowhere in the Qur’an where alcohol is specifically mentioned as prohibited. It is mentioned that one should not pray when intoxicated.
Alcohol prohibition was the Prophet’s choice. When he was presented by angel Gabriel with 2 drinks; a glass of milk and a glass of wine; the prophet took the glass of milk upon which the angel said; you have chosen rightly. From now on; alcohol is prohibited among your Ummah.
There is not a day; not a single day that I watched TV Patrol without news of death due to alcohol intoxication like vehicular accidents, shooting incidents, mauling, hacking/stabbing incidents, child abuse, rape and lot of other crimes not to mention a gamut of diseases cause by alcohol; liver cirrhosis, heart diseases and malignancies. Alcohol is a curse; a potion of the demons.
What we see in the news is a tiny fraction of the bigger picture. We get to see what the media caught on the spot in Metro Manila meaning we get to see just one street out of thousands of big and small roads in the city where drinking is going on 24/7 but hey; expand your imagination to the provinces and other cities then further out to other countries. It is mindboggling. We live in a drunken world but ah; not Muslim nations. The statistics of 2.5 million deaths should not include 1.2 billon Muslims meaning 2.5 million of 5.5 billion almost 500,000 deaths for every billion of the planet’s non-Muslim denizens.
Every year because of Prophet Muhammad’s (s.a.w.) impeccable vision of the future; he saves 500,000 Muslim lives not to mention millions of injuries some of whom would have serious disabilities. (Read the WHO statistics)

Alcohol
The harmful use of alcohol is a global problem which compromises both individual and social development. It results in 2.5 million deaths each year. Alcohol is the world’s third largest risk factor for premature mortality, disability and loss of health; it is the leading risk factor in the Western Pacific and the Americas and the second largest in Europe. Alcohol is associated with many serious social and developmental issues, including violence, child neglect and abuse, and absenteeism in the workplace. It also causes harm far beyond the physical and psychological health of the drinker. It harms the well-being and health of people around the drinker. An intoxicated person can harm others or put them at risk of traffic accidents or violent behaviour, or negatively affect co-workers, relatives, friends or strangers. Thus, the impact of the harmful use of alcohol reaches deep into society.
Harmful drinking is a major determinant for neuropsychiatric disorders, such as alcohol use disorders and epilepsy and other noncommunicable diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, cirrhosis of the liver and various cancers. The harmful use of alcohol is also associated with several infectious diseases like HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This is because alcohol consumption weakens the immune system and has a negative effect on patients’ adherence to antiretroviral treatment.
A significant proportion of the disease burden attributable to harmful drinking arises from unintentional and intentional injuries, including those due to road traffic accidents, violence, and suicides. Fatal injuries attributable to alcohol consumption tend to occur in relatively younger age groups.

According to WHO, worldwide alcohol causes 1.8 million deaths (3.2% of total) and 58.3 million (4% of total) of Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs). Unintentional injuries alone account for about one third of the 1.8 million deaths, while neuro-psychiatric conditions account for close to 40% of the 58.3 million DALYs.

Learn to read.It says harmful drinking , one glass of day has been shown to help ones health not hurt it. It is the unbalanced use of it that harms. You can also drink to much water and die from it. All in balance.

So the story of Muhammad hangs on a line may be he did it cause his muslim companions were heavy wine drinkers to get them under control Muhammad received a so called instant revelation fron ALLAH to prohibit them from drinking wine.

More than 70 percent of urine contains bacteria with at least 33 tipes of bacteria.
It simply common sense why didn't Gabriel prohibited the drinking of urine.
Wine is much beter.
Prohibition came from Moses's time long before Muhammad's time with all the laws that God gave Moses.
The Bible allows Christians to drink alcohol for medical reasons.
Paul told Timothy, "Stop drinking only water and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illness." (1 Timothy 5:23)
The Bible sometimes portrays alcohol as something good enjoyable.
Jesus’ first miracle involved turning water into wine for a wedding celebration. (John 2:3-11) Psalm 104 says, "He makes grass to grow for the cattle, and plants for man to cultivate—bringing forth food from the earth; wine that gladdens the heart of man, oil to make his face shine, and bread that sustains his heart." (v. 14-15)
The Bible forbids drunkenness.
Although the Bible never says that alcohol itself is sinful, it does say many times that drunkenness is a sin. God says, "Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit." (Ephesians 5:6) In fact, there are many verses in the Bible which speak out against drunkenness. (For a few examples, see Romans 13:13; Galatians 5:19-21; 1 Peter 4:3.)
I am not saying that drinking is a sin but the social impact the prohibition has brought is staggering. Don’t you wish, Jesus has not turned water into wine? Imagine 3 billion of planet earth’s denizens (Muslims + Christians) not drinking Alcohol.

ReplyDeleteIt is not permissible for Muslims to drink alcohol even in small quantities. The reason behind this prohibition relates mainly to the intoxicating effect of alcohol on the faculty of reason in human beings.
ReplyDeleteThe mind is of utmost importance because it is the recipient of the divine message and legal rulings. In other words, the accountability of human beings is solely determined by their mental capacity. People are not held accountable for anything when they are asleep or under the effect of anesthesia for surgical procedures.
The prohibition of alcohol in the Quran was gradual mainly because drinking was a deeply rooted practice in pre-Islamic Arabia. The prohibition was imposed in four stages. The first was the subtle disapproval of alcohol when God Almighty said: “… and grapevines you take intoxicant and good provision” (Quran 16: 67). In this verse, God Almighty described grapes as wholesome and good but did not describe the state of inebriation they produced as either pleasant or good. This implicit disapproval was well understood by the Arabs who inferred from these words God’s disapproval. The second stage was when God Almighty prohibited Muslims against approaching prayers in a state of intoxication and said: “O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying…” (Quran 4: 43). The third stage was when God the Almighty revealed that though alcohol does have certain benefits, its harm outweighs its benefits: “They ask you about wine and gambling. Say, "In them is great sin and [yet, some] benefit for people. But their sin is greater than their benefit” (2:219). The final stage of prohibition was when God stated clearly its prohibition: “O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than God], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful” (Quran 5: 90).
We understand that in a society where pubs are part of the popular culture, Muslims might face some difficulties in changing their lifestyle to refrain from consuming intoxicants. They should therefore try to engage themselves in other social activities that are free from anything prohibited.
